It looks like an Artist’s Fantasy, with it’s curved, flowing lines and archways and layered gardens and terraces with dream-like pools of water. The Village knows it as Alan Macbeth’s house- the building at 309 Xenia Ave in Yellow Springs. it was built over a 40-year process of adding here and there, and Alan asking “what if?” when stones or bricks serendipitously came his way. It is a work of love, it is a work of art. And inside the art was the Oten Gallery run by alan Macbeth and in the Gallery he made many beautiful, functional things, and he painted portraits. 

That’s where we begin talking about this gallery show, it is all about the portraits of Alan Macbeth. Alan died this year. We want to honor him. He left us a magnificent legacy of an intentionally artistic building. It brings pleasure to all who walk past it and even more to those who stop to explore it. The portraits he painted are of Springers “As He Saw Us.”

Please join us on Thursday, September 27 from 6-9pm, at the John Bryan Community Gallery for the Reception for “As He Saw Us” Portraits of Villagers by Alan Macbeth. This reception is also for the Permanent COllection’s “Remembering” show. There are two wings to the John Bryan Community Gallery with a different show in each wing. Both shows are honoring our artists who have passed on. At 7pm there will be time for sharing memories of the artists.

Music, visual art, friends, an art puzzler game, good food and remembering beloved artists. What could be better?
