Antioch College will host a public lecture with author, historian and Antioch alumnus Thaddeaus “Thad” Russell `89 on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Russell will discuss his latest book, “A Renegade History of the United States,” which provides a controversial look into the history of the U.S.—suggesting that “wicked and corrupt,” accidental revolutionaries legitimized the taboo and made America the land of the free through their rebellious actions. Russell provides a dramatic look into our nation’s history—built on clashes between the renegades and their “respectable” foes in the struggle to preserve social order versus pursing one’s own desires.

Russell is a historian, cultural critic and adjunct assistant professor of American Studies at Occidental College. Prior to joining Occidental College, Russell taught history, American Studies, and the history of philosophy at Columbia University, Barnard College, The New School for Social Research, and Eugene Lang College.

Russell’s first book, Out of the Jungle: Jimmy Hoffa and the Re-Making of the American Working Class, was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2001. He is a frequent contributor to The Daily Beast and has written for The Huffington Post, New York Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, The Christian Science Monitor, Salon, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has also published scholarly essays in American Quarterly and The Columbia History of Post-World War II America.

Russell has appeared on the History Channel, Al-Jazeera, Fox News, Fox Business Network and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Russell is a 1989 graduate of Antioch College, and received a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University.

The lecture is open to the public, and will be held on Wednesday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. in McGregor Hall room 113, Antioch College.
