May 12, 2018 @ 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Meet Hannah Beachler, Production Designer for Black Panther, at the
National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center May 12

Special Talk Kicks Off the Museum’s Newest Exhibit Behind the Mask: Black Power in Comics

(COLUMBUS) –Visit the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center (NAAMCC) in Wilberforce on
Saturday, May 12 and hear from renowned production designer Hannah Beachler as the museum opens its
newest exhibit, Behind the Mask: Black Power in Comics. The program moderator will be Columbus visual
and comic book artist, Brian Moss, has agreed to be the moderator of our Hannah Beachler program on
May 12. Brian is a well-known artist and just curated and opened “Black Panther: Celebrating 50+ Years of
Black Super Heroes” at the King Arts Complex in Columbus.

Behind the Mask: Black Power in Comics explores the painful and triumphant history of African Americans
in comic books. The exhibit delves into the history of black comic book characters who, in the past, were
rarely featured as heroes. It was far more common to see them represented as “helpless” sidekicks or
supporting characters written by white creative teams. Black comic book creators are now emerging to
establishing superheroes of their own, reflecting a truer self-identity and cultural pride.

At 12:30 p.m. hear Hannah Beachler, production designer from the blockbuster movie Black Panther, in a
special talk about her filmmaking experience. In addition to her work on Black Panther, Beachler was the
creative visual force behind the Academy Award-winning film Moonlight and Beyoncé’s concept album
Lemonade. A Centerville, Ohio native, Beachler studied fashion design at the University of Cincinnati and
attended Wright State University for film.
