National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center to host family fun event for the final day of Conscience of the Human Spirit: The Life of Nelson Mandela

WILBERFORCE, OH Oct. 4, 2016- Join us on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016 for your last chance to see Conscience
of the Human Spirit: The Life of Nelson Mandela at the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural
Center, 1350 Brush Row Rd. in Wilberforce. This moving exhibit of 59 quilts is curated by Marsha
MacDowell, Ph.D. Professor and Curator, Michigan State University Museum and Director, The Quilt Index;
and Carolyn L. Mazloomi, Ph.D., Independent Scholar and Founding Director, Women of Color Quilters
Network. The diverse and powerful pieces reflect the life this remarkable leader and illustrate how he
touched individual lives, changed a nation, and literally served as the conscience of the human spirit for
individuals around the world.
We will celebrate the end of the exhibit’s successful run with the following activities:
 10:00 am – 12:30 pm showing of the film “Freedom Riders” followed by a discussion and a craft
workshop facilitated by Columbus artist Lynn Grimes
 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm “My South African Life” Julialynne Walker will share her fascinating experiences
on living and working in South Africa during Nelson Mandela’s presidency
 2:00 pm & 3:00 pm African dance and drum classes presented by Borenya West African Drum and
Dance
Other current NAAMCC exhibits include: Col. Charles Young and The Buffalo Soldiers; The Voices of the
Revolution; and Celebrating Our Past and Embracing Our Future: The History of Wilberforce University.
Museum hours for the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center for Saturday are 9:00am –
4:00pm. Worldwide-To-Go food truck will be parked at the museum all day cooking up tasty treats!
NAAMCC admission prices are: $6 reg. admission; $5 seniors, active military & AAA members; $3 children
(ages 6-17 yrs.). Admission is always free to Ohio History Connection & NAAMCC members and children
under 6. All of the activities listed above are included with your paid admission.
