The Herndon Gallery at Antioch College is pleased to announce the opening of its newest exhibition, TAG! Territorial Negotiations, an exhibition curated from the street art of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and exploring the territorial claims and negotiations inherent in public art.

On January 21, 2015, at 7:00 p.m., the Herndon Gallery will roll out the Steinway and welcome visiting New York City pianist/composer Gregg Kallor for a public piano performance and conversation called, Redefining music for the 21st century. This performance is supported by Cityfolk Legacy Jazznet Endowment and the ArtsLIVE Endowment, and is shared with the Herndon Gallery through the generosity of the University of Dayton.

Wednesday, Jan 21st, 7:00 p.m.
The Herndon Gallery, South Hall
Free and open to the public

New York City-based pianist and composer GREGG KALLOR—known for moving seamlessly between jazz and classical genres—will chat with Neal Gittleman (Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor) and Dave Barber (Host of WYSO’s Jazz Night). Herndon Gallery’s Steinway will be on-hand for a few musical illustrations during the discussion.

What happens when classical meets jazz? An effervescent magic fills the room. At least this is what seems to be the case with Gregg Kallor, a gifted pianist/composer who was classically trained but continues to be irresistibly drawn to jazz.

The recipient of an Aaron Copland Award for composition, Kallor has studied with some of the jazz greats, from Kenny Barron at Rutgers University, to Fred Hersch at the New England Conservatory of Music. In 2012, he founded the SingleNoon Records label, distributed by Naxos of America; this year, he was named the inaugural Composer-In-Residence at SubCulture in New York City. In concert, Kallor will present one of his most recent and well-received works, A Single Noon—a musical tableau of life in New York City told through a combination of composed music and improvisation. This is music, according to Hersch, that “… has clearly absorbed the past and looks to a bright and borderless musical future.”

This is supported by Cityfolk Legacy Jazznet Endowment and the ArtsLIVE Endowment and shared with us through the generosity of the University of Dayton.

IN CONCERT: Gregg Kallor will perform as part of the University of Dayton’s ArtsLIVE series at 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 22nd in the Sears Recital Hall, Jesse Philips Humanities Center.
