The Farmer & Adele, Country-Western Christmas Spectacular

December 9, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This December marks the 4th year that Keenan Wade and his musical partner, Grace Adele, will perform a yuletide concert.

It’s the first time, however, that the duo known as Farmer & Adele are taking a seasonal show — one they’ve since dubbed a “Country-Western Christmas Spectacular!” — on the road.

Inspired by the classic holiday recordings of Gene Autry, Bing Crosby and Andy Williams, the twangy performers from Nashville, Tenn., want to incite nostalgia.

“The fun part of what we’re doing, in a way, is carrying on that tradition,” Wade said.

The couple, Tennessee residents for seven years, has central Ohio roots: Wade, a 34-year-old mandolin player, hails from West Jefferson; Adele, 36, a singer and guitarist, grew up on the Northwest Side of Columbus.

The two spoke before a concert at Clifton Opera House:

Q: How did the “spectacular” come about?

Wade: We first got together with friends to do this. There must have been a secret camera in our house because people and places started calling us for parties.

The first call we got was from the ABC show Nashville — they film a lot of it here in Nashville. We played their Christmas cast party. All of the actors were watching us and smiling and taking photos of us. It was kind of surreal.

Q: What did you learn adapting classic Christmas songs?

Wade: They’re harder than they sound. There’s a depth to the style of the writing — so beautifully complicated — even though we hear them in passing so much each year and don’t think about it.

Sleigh Ride is the ultimate Gershwin-ish Christmas theme — one foot in jazz and one foot in classical — with quite a bit of key changes and chord changes. It swings like crazy.

Q: You’ll also perform an original tune, Christmas Comes Just Once a Year. Could you talk about it?

Adele: Oddly enough, we wrote it in August on a beautiful sunny day. There were lizards crawling up a stone wall; we saw butterflies. We were talking about our Christmas traditions and came up with a melody.

The song does entail a lot of the same themes of warmth and the overall feeling you get during Christmas, spending time with people, the sights and sounds.

Q: As musical partners of eight years, how did you meet?

Adele: We both were playing in Grandview (Heights) at an art hop. My band was playing across the street from his band. I was sitting on the bench warming up; he came by and introduced himself and sat next to me and we played a Hank Williams song together.
