Local Knowledge Poster (pdf)
A free lecture series featuring Miami Valley area professors speaking on
a wide range of topics will launch in Yellow Springs on Thursday,
September 25th and continue bi-monthly through May 2009. The
brainchild of OSU Slavic Studies professor Angela Brintlinger, the
series aims to draw on the rich, intellectual resources of the many
colleges throughout the Miami Valley and create bridges between the
knowledge they have to share and the communities in which they live.
"The people who live in and around Yellow Springs are an amazing local
resource," says Brintlinger. "LK will be a forum for intellectual and
cultural exchange and a fun way to celebrate community."
The first talk on September 25th will feature University of Dayton
Physics and Electro-optics Professor Robert Brecha speaking about "The
Economics of Climate Change." Other evenings to follow will feature
Andrew Carlson of Capital University on "Health, Wealth and Family: Life
in an Ethiopian Peasant Community"; Lowell Monke of Wittenburg
University on "Unplugging Education: Why a High Tech Society Requires
High Touch Learning"; Marie Hertzler of Wright State University on "Language and Legacy of Francophone Canada"; and Antioch College's Chris
Hill with a Report from the "Thai/Burma Border Tactical Media and
Networks."
The audience should gather fourth Thursdays, alternate months, except
November at the Yellow Springs Senior Center Great Room on Xenia Avenue
at 6:30 (September 25th, November 13th, January 22nd, March 26th,
2009 and May 28st, 2009). Refreshments and childcare will be
available. Talks begin at 7pm, with a wine tasting to follow afterwards
at the Emporium/Underdog Café next door.
The series is sponsored by the Ohio Humanities Council and the Yellow
Springs Community Foundation, with the Yellow Springs News as a media
sponsor. More information is available on the website of Community
Solution, a supporting partner: www.communitysolution.org
