From Sheep to Shawl — The Fiber Journey

August 29, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

About this Event: Join shepherdess Keba Hitzeman as she takes you on a brief tour of Innisfree on the Stillwater, her certified Organic farm near Pleasant Hill, Ohio. Meet the heritage Shetland wool sheep (along with some Kinder goats and Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs!) and walk through the process of shearing, skirting, washing, prepping, and spinning that wool into yarns for knitted, woven, or crocheted projects. Learn about the Shetlands – their history, wool types, colors, and the future of the breed. Questions are encouraged – what would you like to know about sheep?

About the teacher: A woman with many hats, including caregiver, farmer, shepherdess, and teacher, Keba is now owner and steward of the farm where she was raised – Innisfree on the Stillwater. Along with her husband and mother, she cares for a flock of heritage Shetland wool sheep, a handful of Kinder goats, several Livestock Guardian Dogs, and a motley crew of free-ranging chickens. The primary crop on their certified Organic farm is grass for the sheep and goats, along with row crops and many areas that have been intentionally allowed to return to nature, providing food and habitat for wildlife and pollinators. Before taking over the farm from her parents, Keba taught high school and college Spanish at several local school districts. Caring for the farm is both work and play, but she also enjoys hiking, baseball, gaming, and yoga.
