The YS Chamber Orchestra is performing an infrequently-heard 18th-century
melodrama, “Medea” by the Czech composer Georg Benda. Quite popular in
their day, medodramas as they were originally conceived combined spoken
drama with tightly-integrated descriptive music to create a new genre that
differed from both opera and plays with incidental music. The text is an
adaptation and reduction of the tragedy by Euripides. Also on the program,
the beautiful Symphony No. 29 by Mozart.

A semi-staged production, “Medea” will be performed, in English, with great
intensity by actress and director Lorrie Sparrow, with supporting cast from
the YS Theater Company.
