This class takes creativity and upcycling to the next level by helping students create their own one-of-a-kind piece of artwork on a 12″ x 16″ canvas panel using primarily found materials. We’ll cover a number of collaging techniques, as well as general composition rules and simple color theory. Then we’ll get thrifty using provided materials to piece and patch together our own blended murals. Come curious, and walk away with an original piece of art for that empty nook in your house … and challenged to find other opportunities for everyday home upcycling you may have overlooked in the past.

Jen Bachelder graduated from Marietta College with a BFA in Graphic Design and a minor in Studio Art. Having always been interested in collage, Jen started experimenting with different mediums in 2009, and by the end of that year she began collaging and mailing postcards made completely out of garbage. Inspiration for these pieces came from two places: 1. She was receiving some truly beautiful direct mailers and wished to send them back out into the world, and 2. She was completely broke. So like any resourceful recent college grad without the funds to purchase paper or canvas, she was forced to look outside the box for inspiration. After a good response to the initial postcards, Jen expanded her designs to include a full 2011 calendar. To date, she’s designed nearly 100 one-of-a-kind postcards and three 12 month calendars using nothing but her own garbage. Inspirational!

To register for the class, simply reply to this email with your interest or call 937-679-9722 with your name and contact information. Payment is due at the beginning of class. Students are welcome to bring items they’d like to use (paper clippings, photos [or copies of photos if they don’t want to ruin an original], ticket stubs, handwritten notes, anything flat that you can glue down).
