Beyond Brewing Art Party

August 13, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

Yellow Springs, OH • 07/11/17— The Yellow Springs Brewery will be hosting a very different kind of exhibition in their taproom this July and August. The exhibit is part of an ongoing monthly series hosted by the Yellow Springs Brewery entitled, Art + Ale, featuring the latest work from local artists in the brewery taproom. In this case, the work is extremely local, as in, from the Brewery’s very own pool of talent employee artists working in a variety of different mediums.

The show will feature work from Kristie Moore, Heather Gnaw, Dan Robertson, Shawn Combs, Travis Lewis, and Mike Fonderhide. Diversity of medium and form is the commonality amongst all the participating artists. Kristie Moore considers herself a craftsperson above all. Every year she makes ornaments that are essentially lighthearted caricatures of each Brewery staff member. She works in different mediums each time. For this show, she is creating a montage of her collected sketches that form the basis of the caricature ornaments and they will be affixed to a wood panel and finished with art resin.

Heather Gnaw creates stained glass ornaments and window hangings. Her love for making things started with pottery and then found its way to the discovery of stained glass during a class at a local crafts store in Beavercreek. According to Gnaw, stained glass making has experienced a resurgence over the last couple of years. She is excited to share her work for the first time in this exhibit because she looks forward to feedback from people which she plans to use to refine her work and create a website on which to share it more widely.

Dan Robertson is an abstract painter transplanted from Boston to the Midwest about ten years ago. He mostly works with acrylics, oil pastels, and mixed media on canvas or reclaimed wood. According to Robertson, he focuses mainly on contemporary figurative and landscape but much of his work reflects different aspects of relationships between men and women. He enjoyed an active career as a professional artist, showing and selling his work in galleries around the country until the Recession hit in 2008 and many of the galleries he worked with closed. Robertson and his family discovered Yellow Springs through attending one of the local art fairs and fell in love with the area, decided to quit the rat race in the big city and enjoy a slower pace of life in southwestern Ohio.

Shawn Combs is a photographer who likes to explore the overlooked aspects of our everyday world. He focuses on random and found outdoor objects and likes to present them to viewers in new and aesthetically pleasing ways. He works mainly with color, digital photography. Combs is a native Daytonian.

Travis Lewis is native of Yellow Springs, but has lived most of his life in the Dayton area, making a name for himself as an artist and illustrator in the imaginative realism, or what is more commonly known as the dark fantasy horror, genre. In the past few years Lewis has gone from working widely as an illustrator to focusing more exclusively on producing gallery work full time. He primarily works in graphite, but sometimes in oils too. His work has been featured on the cover of The Collected Stories of H.P. Lovecraft and numerous times in the magazine Spectrum Fantastic Art.
