Migrations: Fine Art by Penelope S. Adamson & Cathy Ledeker Opening Reception

September 18, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Yellow Springs, Ohio— Artists Penelope S. Adamson of Yellow Springs, Ohio and Cathy Ledeker of Lawrence, Kansas, are exhibiting their paintings, drawings, and prints in a two-woman show entitled “Migrations.” Running through October, the Artist Opening Reception will be Sunday, September 18th from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at The Winds Café and Bakery at 215 Xenia Avenue in Yellow Springs.  Both artists will be present for the occasion.

The collaborative exhibit converges interpretations of life, nature and soul journeys of two experienced artists, showcasing their work through watercolor, pen and ink, and Prismacolor mediums.  The show “Migration” maps over 20 years of collective artistic exploration and resulting art works.  Ms. Adamson and Ms. Ledeker are connected by family and friendship.  These ties have developed and ripened over time and geography.

About the Artists

Penelope S. Adamson, a long-time resident of the Village of Yellow Springs, began painting and drawing before she could talk. She works at Antioch College and has been making art for decades. Her illustrations are often nature-themed, with subjects integrated from her backyard woods. The pieces feature detailed, intricate pen and ink with Prismacolor, often stretching beyond the border. This is her eighth show in Yellow Springs.

According to Ms. Adamson “Migrations” is about “walking the path—it’s following my inner path and knowing instinctively that it’s my journey to take. I hope the art draws everyone who sees it into this experience.”

Ms. Ledeker first visited Yellow Springs in the fall of 2001 when she delivered her daughter, Emily Seibel, to the Antioch campus as an entering student.  Ms. Ledeker has since returned many times to hike the Glen, explore the Village and enjoy family and friends.  Emily, now a full-time Yellow Springs’ resident, directs a local nonprofit and resides with her partner of 10 years, fellow artist Penelope S. Adamson.

A professional artist for over 40 years and recently retired, Ms. Ledeker, a watercolorist, has been painting in a state of deep contemplation and newfound freedom.  Her subject matter features ordinary, worn-out or thrown away objects provocatively balanced and combined.  The objects are surrounded generously by negative, unpainted space, creating an air of calm and visual quiet.

Ms. Ledeker reflects, “I love intently studying and pairing rusty, cast-off or overlooked things (man-made and natural) in imaginative and sometimes impossible ways to compose stories of myth and mystery.”

About the Exhibition

The exhibition “Migrations” has been 10 years in the making.  Ms. Adamson and Ms. Ledeker have brought together their complimentary styles of intense artistic focus, delicate and masterful technique, and conceptual power to create a rich visual feast.

On working together, Ms. Adamson says “This collaboration means a lot to me—it means my family coming together to share our work with the world. Cathy is a wonderful artist, and I truly admire her work.”

The pathways of “Migrations” are simultaneously subconscious and purposeful, depicting chance, trust, suffering and joy in a strong collaboration between two mature artists in their prime. The show is about the migration of life, of comings and goings. Designed to take the viewer on a journey, it beckons us to look into ourselves and beyond.
