Retro Matinee — The Breakfast Club

April 3, 2015 @ 9:25 pm - 11:00 pm

THE BREAKFAST CLUB is turning 30 this year (can you believe it!?!), so we’ve lined up a few showings this weekend as part of our ongoing Retro Series. Legendary auteur John Hughes owned the teenage angst genre and The Breakfast Club is his masterpiece: What Rebel without a Cause is to the ’50s, The Breakfast Club is to the ’80s. It plays Friday at 9:25 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Comedy Drama

97 minutes

R rating

1985
Director: John Hughes
Cast: Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall
The five quintessential teens of writer-director John Hughes’ coming-of-age comedy-drama “The Breakfast Club” celebrates its 30th anniversary this month.

The story of a brain (Anthony Michael Hall), an athlete (Emilio Estevez), a basket case (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald) and a criminal (Judd Nelson) reluctantly bonding over their mutual struggle to be understood.

“We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was that we did wrong. What we did WAS wrong. But we think you’re crazy to make us write this essay telling you who we think we are. What do you care? You see us as you want to see us…in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions. You see us as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Correct? That’s the way we saw each other at seven o’clock this morning… – The Breakfast Club.”
