VIDA (Village Inspiration and Design Award) Launch

The Village of Yellow Springs Public Art Commission is pleased to announce the first recipient of the VIDA (Village Inspiration and Design Award) – Kelly and Tim Callahan of 1580 Corry Street! The Callahan’s rock/monument garden has been a sustained effort over many years that is continually developed. The collection, located at a YS Schools bus stop, is a community art practice that has the potential to create dialogues among our local youth. This VIDA Ceremony will occur during June 19th Art Stroll at the YSAC Community Gallery at 8pm. The YS Arts Council will be holding an Opening Reception that evening for “BOTANICALS: Impressions in Clay, Glass and Photography” with a talk from the artists Dianne Collinson, Kit Crawford and Dennie Eagleson at 7pm.

The VIDA is presented to either a resident or local business owner who creatively enhances the overall appearance of Yellow Springs and makes a positive contribution or improvement to the Village through dedication and efforts towards beautification via innovative use and maintenance of space in our community. The goal of the Award is to recognize inspirational art, architecture, landscaping and design. The Public Art Commission (PAC) accepts nominations for Yellow Springs’s own community beautification award, which will be given up to four times per year, via pac@vil.yellowsprings.oh.us. To nominate, simply submit a short description of why you think the nominee should receive the VIDA along with at least one photograph. Nominated enhancements must be easily visible to the public and located in the Village of Yellow Springs. The PAC reviews nominations at its meetings, which are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm in Council Chambers and are open to the public.

VIDA recipients will receive a traveling trophy designed by local sculptor Jon Hudson and sponsored by Sue and Bob Swaney to display at their residence or business until the next VIDA is awarded as well as a plaque or certificate that they will be able to keep permanently. The criteria for being chosen for the Award includes, but is not limited to, bringing a fresh, lively vibe to our community through landscape, architectural or creative art in either a residential or business space.

The VIDA logo has been created by local design student Lela Dewey who attends the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning.
