This hybrid work, also known as Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2, was commissioned for the 400th anniversary celebrations of Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press. The texts, mostly taken from the Psalms, use the idea of the coming of light as an analogy for the benefits of literacy and enlightenment, banishing the darkness of ignorance.
