October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 18, 2014 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 pm

What began two decades ago in scattered communities as a visible gesture of support for survivors and victims of domestic violence, today has become one of the most widely-recognized symbols of the domestic violence movement—the purple ribbon. The Family Violence Prevention Center of Greene County coordinated a campaign and will hang over 200 purple ribbons in the cities, villages and townships in Greene County in October for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The purple ribbons will be hung in Beavercreek, Cedarville, Fairborn, Jamestown, Bellbrook, Sugarcreek, Xenia, and Yellow Springs. During the week of October 18-25, The Greene Towne Center in Beavercreek will be adorned with purple ribbons as we close out the month’s events

In addition, Purple Ribbon lapel pins will be passed out to every police station and Sherriff’s Office in Greene County. Every officer will be encouraged to wear the ribbon on his/her lapel as a constant reminder to individuals who perpetrate domestic violence that it will not be tolerated and to individuals who have been victims that our community is a safe haven against this heinous crime. Across the entire Miami Valley, families and friends of victims have adopted the purple ribbon to remember and honor their loved ones who have lost their lives at the hands of a person they once loved and trusted. Shelters and local domestic violence programs like the Family Violence Prevention Center are using the purple ribbon to raise awareness about the crime of domestic violence in our communities. In addition to the demonstration of support for victims and advocates, the display of purple ribbons throughout the communities in Greene County conveys a powerful message that there is no place for domestic violence in the homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, or schools of its citizen.
